Well, I know many of you have already heard of this term Pomodoro technique but only quite of you have ever implemented it. So in this blog, I will weigh towards how to apply this technique in day-to-day life, so you will get a good sense of it. So let's dive into it.

What is Pomodoro Technique?

Pomodoro technique is a time management method developed by Francesco. The fundamental approach of this technique is using a timer to break down your time(work) into intervals traditionally 25 minutes of length(depends on you too) separated by short breaks and having a long break after 3 or 4 intervals.

These intervals are referred to as Pomodoro, and each Pomodoro is dedicated to one task and a short break at the end of Pomodoro is to reset your brain and helps to gain back focus and refrain from procrastination.

We can set the length of Pomodoro according to us, I generally prefer 50 minutes for each Pomodoro and 10 mins for a break. Having a list of tasks to be completed in a day beforehand also saves time. And yes there is also a psychology-based 52 17 rule, in which Pomodoro is of 52 minutes then a break of 17 minutes.

When we should follow it?

  • In everyone's life, there comes a moment, when they're out of their field of work for two or more days to detox their brain, in this break many get into social media and other online streaming platform and find themselves impossible to get back into their daily routine, in such scenarios I think Pomodoro helps it a lot(I'll tell you how in next section) because it helps to avoid further latency.
  • In some cases, mental fatigue or unplanned works also leads to a waste of time. Pomodoro technique's short break gives you time to meditate in between to avoid waste of time for your future tasks.
  • Only for students: Having different subjects in a semester and reading before a week of exams(case of most of the CSE students) creates a mess and to resolve it you can definitely make a list of all topics beforehand and read them one by one in each Pomodoro interval. If you haven't done it yet, try it once.

How to use it effectively?

These are some key points which everyone should follow although some changes are always possible:

  • Well, before starting your day, after breakfast, first create your list of tasks which you have to be done by the end of the day. Having a list in front of our eyes always refrains us to avoid procrastinate and saves time to don't think of the new task in the middle of the productive day.
  • You should include a long break approx 1 or 2 hours in every iteration of 3 or 4 Pomodoro.
  • Now it's time to itinerary the tasks, but before that, mind all of your meeting's time, so that your task and meeting don't overlap. And plan them following all Pomodoro rules.
    • One simple way is to write all tasks on `todo notes and can use an alarm clock(either uses your phone) Sticky notes
    • Another way, you can use Microsoft calendar on your personal computer where you can add all your tasks with reminders, and having a reminder system by default helps you to plan work in so short time for a day.
    • Click on time's bar in calendar to set your event(task) Calendar to plan
    • Along with the above point, you can use Microsoft todo app to create a list of to-do tasks. todolist.PNG
    • Download links for Windows user:
  • Long break should include your hobby as a part, which makes you feel more valuable. Yes, surely you can spend some time on youtube or other stuff too.
  • Sometimes we forget to drink water in a short break, so just add a reminder for Drinking water, staying hydrated keeps cells active, balances chemical process and get rid of toxins and dead cells, because at last health is wealth. Right?
  • Include your WhatsApp, Instagram, and Gmail activities in breaks only.
  • Keep the length of the Pomodoro interval in such a way that, from start to end, in each minute of it, you should not interrupt by any distractions.
  • Having a long list of tasks should also have a slot of physical exercise for 15-20 minutes.
  • In student's life, mostly distraction is created by only social media so try to don't open them in the middle of Pomodoro.

Why everyone should follow it?

  • Directly or indirectly, it helps you in time management and planning skills for a fast-paced deadline-driven environment.
  • It maintains motivation in you, one of the reasons for demotivation is doing something without any purpose, but writing your own task every day gives you hope and motivation for what you are doing every day.
  • Helps you deal with distractions(very few can master it).

Summary

  • Fix the length of Pomodoro and short break.
  • Write all the tasks on the todo app(or on notes too).
  • Plan all the tasks on the calendar(or any similar platform).
  • Don't forget to drink water after each Pomodoro.
  • Don't complete your work in a short break. Give time to your brain to reset again.
  • Try to avoid social media distraction while you are in Pomodoro.
  • All the points are just to boost up your productivity and time management.
